A Collaborative Lab Community

The Enquist Lab studies biodiversity and the structure and function of ecological systems through fieldwork, experiments, theory, modeling, ecoinformatics, and data analysis. This breadth depends on collaboration among people with different backgrounds, skills, perspectives, and ways of thinking.

We seek to build a research community in which people are treated with dignity, expectations are explicit, and everyone has a meaningful opportunity to learn and contribute. We welcome people regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, neurodivergence, age, family status, or career path.

Our Commitments

As a lab, we strive to:

• Set clear expectations for mentoring, research conduct, authorship, data stewardship, communication, and field safety.
• Recognize that access to training, equipment, travel, professional networks, and prior research experience is uneven, and work to reduce avoidable barriers.
• Make field, computational, experimental, and meeting activities accessible where project requirements and available resources allow.
• Value the many forms of work that make collaborative science possible, including field observations, experiments, data curation, software, theory, synthesis, outreach, and team coordination.
• Credit intellectual, technical, field, community, and data contributions appropriately.
• Encourage questions, respectful disagreement, careful listening, and constructive feedback while not tolerating harassment or discrimination.
• Revisit our practices as our lab and the wider scientific community continue to learn.

We recognize that fieldwork, travel, caregiving, disability, finances, and immigration status can affect participation in research. Lab members are encouraged to discuss barriers and mentoring needs with Brian or another trusted University resource. Formal accommodations and reporting are handled through the appropriate University of Arizona support and reporting resources.

Building a considerate, welcoming, and accountable community is an ongoing responsibility shared by everyone in the lab.
